Tulip bulb planting season is here! We asked our co-founder/CEO’s husband and third generation tulip bulb farmer, Hein van Haaster, to share some expert tips to ensure your tulips have a bountiful bloom when Spring arrives next year.
When is the best time to plant tulips?
It’s best to plant your tulip bulbs between late October and early November. Timing depends on what type of climate you live in because tulips bulbs need to experience 14 weeks of temperature between 40-50 degrees in order to bloom.
How do you plant a tulip bulb?
When planting tulip bulbs make sure to always plant it pointy side up about 10-15 cm deep in loose garden soil, or 5 cm deep if you’re using a pot. Then cover with soil and water immediately.
How often should I water the tulip bulbs?
Tulip bulbs can be watered with about one inch of water per week if this amount has not been supplied from rainfall. Be sure not to over water, as this can cause bulbs to rot.
What’s the best way to take care of tulip bulbs?
To ensure your tulips are thriving, make sure to use a terracotta pot with holes in the bottom to allow the water to drain and the roots to remain root-free and healthy if using a pot. Freezing temperatures for a long period of time may prevent the bulbs from flowering. To prevent this, ensure the bulbs are planted at the correct depth of 10-15 cm. For pots, move them to a warmer place such as a garage during freezing weather.
How much sun do tulips need?
Tulips love full sun so it's best to plant them in a spot that gets sun all day or in the afternoon and is protected from the wind.
When do tulips bloom?
Tulips tend to bloom 15-30 days into spring-like weather which is around 68 degrees fahrenheit. In the Netherlands our tulips bloom usually around March - April. If the weather is cool enough the bloom will last for 1-2 weeks and 3-7 days if the weather heats-up.
