SPF PRODUCTS
Yes. We use mineral-based, non-nano Zinc Oxide as an active in all our sunscreens to deliver broad-spectrum sun protection. These ingredients sit on the skin’s surface and help reflect and scatter UV rays.
Yes - however this term is not regulated or clearly defined. Our formulas include ingredients that could be considered boosters as film optimizers and stabilizers that improve how the sunscreen applies, wears, and feels. These ingredients do not absorb UV rays or replace the role of mineral filters - they simply help the overall formula perform better on the skin.
In our Tulipscreen Whipped Butter Creme & Tulipscreen Shield & Glow we use Butyloctyl Salicylate & Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene. In our Tulip Dew Sunscreen Serum we use Tridecyl Salicylate. In our Tulipscreen Hydrating Lip Oils we use Butyloctyl Salicylate.
There is no regulated or clear definition of a "booster". Many ingredients, including antioxidants and botanicals are multifunctional and so have the secondary benefit of supporting SPF. These are ingredients that help distribute mineral particles more evenly across the skin, reduce visible residue, improve water resistance, and stabilize the formula. They also contribute to a more comfortable, wearable texture.
These ingredients help our sunscreen formulas perform at their best. They improve how the zinc oxide spreads across the skin, allowing for a smoother, more uniform film and more consistent coverage. This helps reduce the amount of pigment needed, resulting in a lighter texture and less visible residue. They also support water and sweat resistance, protect delicate ingredients like antioxidants from breaking down in sunlight, and improve the overall feel on skin - making it more likely you’ll apply and reapply as recommended. These ingredients do not function as UV filters.
We use coated zinc oxide for better skin compatibility, improved stability, and smoother application.
Coated zinc oxide blends more easily on the skin and helps reduce irritation and white cast. It also minimizes interactions between zinc and other ingredients, making the formula more stable.
These boosters are not included at the active level required to provide sun protection like tradtional chemical filters would. They are support ingredients used to improve the performance and stability of the overall formula. Unlike traditional chemical UV filters (like avobenzone or octinoxate), they are not included at the level to absorb or filter UV rays and so are not classified as active ingredients by the FDA.
Our packaging states 100% mineral as our sunscreen uses a 100% mineral sunscreen active non-nano Zinc Oxide. We adhere to the FDA's strict sunscreen regulations that any sun-protective ingredient at efficacious level must be stated as an active ingredient within the drug facts. While there has been growing discourse about the use of "boosters" in mineral sunscreen, this term is not regulated or clearly defined. Our formulas include ingredients that could be considered boosters as film optimizers and stabilizers that improve how the sunscreen applies, wears, and feels. These ingredients do not absorb UV rays or replace the role of mineral filters - they simply help the overall formula perform better on the skin. Due to these recent social media conversations surrounding SPF boosters we have amended all communication to state "mineral active" however as packaging has over 12mth leadtime it will take some time for us to make this amendment visible on pack. We want to thank our community for their ongoing support and patience during this transition.
